| Description: | David Fraser notes that the present drawing was the basis for a second, more highly finished drawing of the same scene: DBYMU 1937-739/7. The two drawings adopt an identical viewpoint: even the edge of the a wall and ledge to the left are included [see Fraser, D. 'Wright in Italy' (Sudbury, 1987), p.11.]. Nicolson notes that no finished oil painting using this particular composition is now known [see Nicolson, B. 1968, p.81]. Jane Wallis notes that the study has the 'feel of a drawing where the artist is ensuring that he has the topography and the buildings correct, rather than the spectacle itself - although fireworks are shown shooting forth, from the top of the castle' [see Wallis, 1997, p.78]. |
