Study of the Prophet Jonah, after Michelangelo

Date: 1774-1775

Medium: Pen and ink on tan paper.

Object Type:Drawing

Description:This study is taken from the figure of Jonah on the Sistine Chapel ceiling painted by Michelangelo. Jane Wallis noted that Wright, in conjunction with his friend and patron John Leigh Philips, were investigating the possibility of having some of Wright's drawings by Michelangelo engraved. These drawings appear, according to a letter to Philips of 24 September 1792, to have been kept together as a 'book of drawings'. Although the drawings do not appear to have been engraved, the book was recorded in William Bemrose's biography of Wright, published in 1885, and described as holding 36 sketches. Jane Wallis suggested that the drawings after Michelangelo in the DM collection were likely extracted from this volume. However, she also noted that the large size of the present drawing suggests that it did not originate from the same volume. See Wallis, 1997, pp.84-85 [LB: 2024]
Provenance:...; William Bemrose of Derby; by descent to his son, Charles Lloyd Bemrose, by whom donated to Derby Museums in 1914.
