Date: 18.5.1775

Medium: Pen and ink over pencil on laid paper, toned with green wash.

Object Type:Drawing
Dimensions:Support: 568 × 340 mm (22 3/8 × 13 3/8 in.)
Description:Jane Wallis noted that this study can be identified with a C4th BC marble figure. A version with boars head on left instead of a dog is in the Belvedere of the Vatican. Wright omits the dog, wild boar and the staff. Original sculptor unknown, but believed to be a follower of Skopas of Paros (see Wallis, 1997, p.95). Wright is likely to have been working from a cast or copy of the original at the French Academy in Rome. [LB: 2024]
