Drawing of a sculpture of a nude male figure, identified as the Belvedere Hermes, in the Museo Pio-Clementino (part of the Vatican Collections), Rome. The figure is almost full length and turns slightly to the left with his hips pushed forward. Both his right arm and left hand are missing. A piece of cloth is draped on his left shoulder and over his left forearm. The sheet of paper on which the figure is drawn is blue and includes pin holes along its top edge. There are losses to the bottom edge. Made by Joseph Wright of Derby (1734 - 1797), 1775. Pen and ink over pencil on blue paper. Displayed in a cream window mount.

Description:Second of two studies of this figure identified as 'Hermes', or the 'Belvedere Hermes', in the Museo Pio-Clementino (part of the Vatican Collections), Rome. It is a Roman marble copy of a Greek original of Hermes). Another study by Wright of same figure is dated 16.5.1775 (see DBYMU 1914-517/42. In Wright's time, the sculpture was not known as Hermes, but rather as a Meleager, hero of the hunt for the Calydonian Boar.
