She stands beside a decorative urn, upon which is draped a cloth. Inscribed on recto, to upper right (handwritten in pencil): 'Capl - Rome March 22 - 74' and below that (handwritten in ink): '41'. Made by Joseph Wright of Derby (1734 - 1797), 1774. Pencil and charcoal on laid paper. Displayed in a cream window mount.

Description:This drawing is one of three studies of the 'Capitoline Venus' (see DBYMU 1914-517/16 for a sheet contining two studies) made by Wright whilst in Rome. The sculpture is a Roman copy of an Hellenistic sculpture by Praxiteles known as Aphrodite of Knidos. These are of a type called Venus Pudica (modest Venus), owing to the figure's attempt to cover her nakedness with her hands. The 'Capitoline Venus' is named for her locaton in the collection of the Capitoline Museums. [LB: 2024]
