Drawing of a nude male figure with a panther, seen from two slightly different angles, and a male head seen in profile, facing right. Identified as a study of a sculpture of 'Dionysus with Panther' and a study of the head of 'Ganymede' from a cast of the Roman sculpture 'Ganymede and the Eagle', in The Uffizi (formerly in the Villa Medici, Rome). Inscribed on the recto, along the edge of the pedestal (handwritten in pencil): 'F - Academy April 20 - 74' and to top left (handwritten in ink): '200'. Made by Joseph Wright of Derby (1734 - 1797), 1774. Pencil on paper. Displayed in a cream window mount.

Study of 'Dionysus with Panther' and the head of 'Ganymede', after the Antique

Date: 20.4.1774

Medium: Pencil on laid paper.

Object Type:Drawing
Dimensions:Support: 546 × 368 mm (21 1/2 × 14 1/2 in.)
Description:The study shows the figure of Dionysus, carrying grapes, with a panther at his side, seen from two slightly different angles. It is similar, but not identical, to a Roman sculpture in The Uffizi (formerly at the Villa Medici). The study of a male head seen in profile, facing right, matches that of the sculpture of 'Ganymede and the Eagle', which is also in The Uffizi (formerly at the Villa Medici). Wright is likely to have been studying a cast of this sculpture at the French Academy, along with a cast of a sculpture of 'Dionysus with Panther'. Wright made two other studies of this subject on 18 April 1774 at the French Academy (see DBYMU 1914-517/29 and DBYMU 1914-517/45). [LB: 2024]
