Landscape Study with Tree Stump

Date: c.1784-86

Medium: Pen and ink and ink wash on paper.

Object Type:Drawing
Dimensions:Support: 860 × 105 mm (33 7/8 × 4 1/8 in.)
Description:Identified by Kim Sloan as being close to the style of Alexander Cozens of the 1760s. [see Sloan, K. 'Alexander and John Robert Cozens: The Poetry of Landscape', 1986, p.83.] This small study appears to owe much to Alexander Cozens - especially 'Sunlight breaking over a landscape' (British Museum Print Room ref 1867-10-12-19). A blasted tree stump is a recurring motif and can be seen in 'The Earthstopper', 1773 (plate 12) and the 'Italian Landscape View near Tivoli', c.1783-1786 (plate 20). [JW: 1997]
Provenance:...; William Bemrose of Derby; by descent to his son, Charles Lloyd Bemrose, by whom donated to Derby Museums in 1914.
