Study of a Tree

Date: c.1786-1790

Medium: Pen and ink over pencil on paper.

Object Type:Drawing
Dimensions:Support: 158 × 126 mm (6 1/4 × 4 15/16 in.)
Description:The inscription on the verso appears to be by a later hand, probably Bemrose. [JW: 1996] Does not appear to have been included among works shown at 1997 Bicentenery exhibition at Derby Museum and Art Gallery, nor the accompanying catalogue by Jane Wallis. It is unlike the other tree studies in the 1914-517 group, its foliage being rather more swiftly sketched in rather than the careful, graded dabs of ink seen in the other drawings. The ink is sepia toned rather than grey-dark grey, too. [LB: 2024]
Inscriptions:Inscribed on verso (handwritten in pencil): 'Wright of Derby (28)'.
Provenance:...; William Bemrose of Derby; by descent to his son, Charles Lloyd Bemrose, by whom donated to Derby Museums in 1914.
