Recto: Study of a Man in Profile

Date: c.1774

Medium: Pencil and charcoal on paper.

Object Type:Drawing
Dimensions:Support: 229 × 187 mm (9 × 7 3/8 in.)
Description:The costume of this man in profile holding a staff appears to link this drawing to Wright's other Italian studies c.1774. The drawing although sketched twice, however, appears to be a more posed studio sketch rather than an impression of a character seen fleetingly in a Rome street. Figures leaning on, or carrying staffs, feature in several of Wright's finished oil paintings. [Wallis, J. 'Joseph Wright of Derby' (1997), p.83.]
