Description:Very close to Alexander Cozen's 'Matlock High Tor' 1756 (illustated in Nicolson p.86); inscription verso in ink 'No 8 Nov 29th 1793' (top left hand corner); card states that this is practically identical to pl.43 of Cozens 'New Method' (1785) which is illustrated in the Tate Gallery 'Landscape in Britain' catalogue (1973), plate 78. (in fact plates 78 i-iv are a blot development) see Nicolson p.75 note 2 and p.271; Landscape with trees and clouds, after Cozens 'New Method' plates 40-43. Kim Sloan notes that the present study is copied from Plate 43, a mezzotint illustration in Cozens's 'A New Method of Assisting the Invention in Drawing Original Compositions of Landscape' (published 1785).
