    Biography: Born c.1721. Daughter of John Alt, Esq., of Loughborough. Married Thomas Borrow of Castlefields , Derby (1710-1786), on 18th April 1757 at All Saints Church, Loughborough. Had issue: Thomas Borrow, later known as Borough (baptised 1759 at St Peter's Church, Derby), and Anna Honora (baptised 1761 at St Peter's Derby, died 1773). Ann was named the sole executrix of her husband's will and inherited the entirety of his real and personal estate. Ann died in 1799 and was buried at St Lawrence Church at Gotham in Nottinghamshire where her son erected a memorial tablet to her.

Description:Ann (1721 – 1799) was the daughter and heiress of the wealthy Leicestershire landowner, John Alt, and his wife Ann. In 1757, she married Thomas Borrow, and together they made their home at Castlefields House, on the outskirts of Derby. Joseph Wright painted her portrait, along with that of her husband, a few years later.
Provenance:Listed in Wright's Account Book as 'Mrs. Borrow 12.12.0' among pictures of c.1762-65 (page 6v), entry crossed through and listed again (among the same pictures) as 'Mr. and Mrs. Borrow half L., £25.4.'; by descent through the Borrow (later Borough) family of Chetwynd Park, Salop; bequeathed to Derby Museums by Colonel John G. Burton Borough in 1961.
