| Description: | Needwood Forest, an ancient oak woodland once situated on the Derbyshire-Staffordshire border, was an important sanctuary for Joseph Wright during the final decade of his life. This picture was probably painted after one of his many trips to the forest to stay with his friend Thomas Gisborne and presents a peaceful vision, in which man and nature appear to live in harmony. |
