Study of a Man's Head in the manner of Piazzetta

Date: 1751-1755

Medium: Black and white chalks on buff coloured laid paper.

Object Type:drawing
Dimensions:Support: 343 × 241 mm (13 1/2 × 9 1/2 in.)
Description:A note of 1995 on the object record records that David Posnett of the Leger Gallery believed this to be an early studio drawing from Wright's time with Hudson as is related to a group of drawings by Wright discovered in 1994 from this period - but very like study of John Staveley's head for 'the Captive' (Egerton cat.55 and 56). This sensitive chalk drawing of the 'head of an old man in the manner of Piazzetta' (1682-1754) could form part of the same group as the recently-discovered archive of early drawings made in Hudson's studio. A date in the early 1750's would, therefore, seem appropriate. [from J. Wallis, 'Joseph Wright of Derby' (1997), p.64.] Note diagonal hatching in background of this study is similar to that in Wright's study of Cincinnatus (DBYMU 1914-517/18). Handling is similar too, with fine black chalk outlines. Use of white chalk is more sparing in this study, however. Both studies appear to have been made using a stump. [LB and ME: 2024]
