Object Type:drawing
Dimensions:Support: 286 × 232 mm (11 1/4 × 9 1/8 in.)
Description:Identified as being a study of George Montague Dunk, 2nd Earl of Halifax, in van Dyck costume, by Leger Galleries in 1996. Leger also noted similarity with a Thomas Hudson prototype, e.g. portrait of Earl of Guilford, 1755. This pose and mode of dress is strikingly similar to Wright's early self-portrait, at the age of about twenty, notably in the cloak or cape, deep lace collar, sword hanger belt, and crooked, foreshortened elbow.
Provenance:Purchased from David Posnett, Leger Galleries Ltd., 1996.
