Study of a woman in Van Dyck dress, head and torso only, facing slightly to the right, in a feigned oval; wearing a gown with slashed sleeves and lace cuffs, lace trim to the bodice, and bos to the sleeves and bodice front. Her hair is tied back and she wears lace choker around her neck. Made by Joseph Wright of Derby (1734 - 1797). Black and white chalk on blue paper, in cream window mount.

Description:Source for this study unknown, but probably comes from a portrait by Thomas Hudson. Note close similarity of dress, with slashed sleeves and lace cuffs, to Hudson's portraits of Martha Tyrell and Mary Ann Dury, 1754 (NT, Blickling Hall); Frances Hunt, c.1760 (NT, Lanhydrock)' a woman, possibly Elizabeth Aislabie (YCBA); Anne Parsons (Madingley Hall, University of Cambridge). Sleeve detail similar, but slightly different, to DBYMU 1996-1/34B (LB, 2022).
