Verso: Study of a man, head and torso only, facing left, with a cocked hat under his left arm, and his right hand tucked into his waistcoat. His hat and the centre front edges of his waistcoat are decorated with elaborate lacing. Paint stains across the face and hair. Made by Joseph Wright of Derby (1734 - 1797). Black and white chalk on blue paper, in cream window mount.

Description:Original Source Unknown. In their cataloguing notes, Leger Galleries (1996, DM archive) noted a similarity between the finish and handling of this study with DBYMU 1996-1/40B. The inscription to the recto of this sheet '[purple?] Velvet Straw-Coloured Waistcoat, silver laced Hat, ditto' may have been intended to refer to this drawing. The pose seen in this study is the same as that seen in a number of portriats by Allan Ramsay and Thomas Hudson, though none directly matching found so far.
