Description:In their early cataloguing notes for this study, Leger Galleries (1996) identified the source of the composition as Thomas Hudson's portrait of Elizabeth Cartwright, c. 1755-7. This was to form the basis for Wright's portrait of Elizabeth Pigot, 1760 (Danum Gallery, Doncaster).
