Read More![Letter written by Joseph Wright to an unknown recipient, with a study of a view of Castel Sant'Angelo and Saint Peter's in Rome. The letter is contained within a column on the right side of the sheet and reads: 'The collourd drawing I will do for you must be upon a larger scale and sent by a friend as I don't wish do them as letters but I presume the inclos'd sent as sketches of observation or possibly to remove any doubt in regard to particular objects as I take them as faithfully as I can and shall do the others. Also in the mean time I beg you will make no scruple in mentioning any particular objects that you wish as I have justly every reason to have the greatest esteem for you and having experienc'd your sincerity and friendship, I beg you will mention no more about the prices, have you heard any more about the Bishop he told me he was to take Derby in his way to Ireland and talk to you about this picture I should be glad to know; when I go to Naples, as I must go some time hence to make a view of the Lake of Avernus as a companion for the lake of Albano for the Duke of Chabaud I will send you some drawings [-torn] you would wish'. Read More![Letter written by Joseph Wright to an unknown recipient, with a study of a view of Castel Sant'Angelo and Saint Peter's in Rome during the annual firework display known as the 'Girandola'. The letter (continued from the recto) is contained within a column on the left side of the sheet and reads: 'The dots signifies the torches on the Church; before the Girandola began the reflection of the Dome was seen on the watter over the bridge being in shad'y but in the time of the Girandola it was scarce seen the water being so illumin'd if you choose to represent the Girandola at the finishing you may represent the Pesce which is thrown out at the same time, you cannot imagine how vex'd I am at my disappointment in regard to the prints you was so kind as send to Mr Cooper for me: Mr Petty the Gentleman who was to have brought them cald[sic] at Mr Coopers as I gave him this Direction but he writes that he has been at Mr Coopers who has chang'd his Lodgings and having not left notice with the neighbours where he has gone to so that he cannot find him and obligd[sic] to sett[sic] out without them. I am much surprisd[sic] at Mr Cooper as a man of bu[illegible, but may read 'business'] not to have left word where he was gone to lodge'.
