He wears his hair tied back, but a little loose at the temples. He wears a coat and waistcoat and his shirt is closed by a close-fitting neck stock. Inscription to verso, on stetcher 'Joseph Wright of Derby / copied by William Pether'. Made by William Pether (1738 - 1821), c.1767-70(?), pastel on paper laid on canvas, in black painted frame. Glazed.
