Study of 'Cupid and Psyche', after the Antique

Date: 1774

Medium: Pencil and charcoal on laid paper.

Object Type:Drawing
Dimensions:Support: 460 × 302 mm (18 1/8 × 11 7/8 in.)
Description:'The pair are 'Eros and Psyche', in the Capitoline, a Roman C2nd AD copy after the original. Wright must have drawn this on March 23rd 1774 as No.39, 'Apollo with lyre' (cat.158), was done in the Capitoline on that day.' [see Wallis, J. 'Joseph Wright of Derby' (1997), p.90.] Note however that No.41, 'Capitoline Venus', was made on 22 March 1774. Wright's numbering system does not appear to follow a chronological pattern, although it is highly probable that this drawing was made on 23 March. [LB: 2024].
Inscriptions:Inscribed on recto, along pedestal (handwritten pencil): 'Caple Rome 23 - 74' and to top right (handwritten in ink): '40'.
