Description:the children of Hugh and Mary Wood of Swanwick, Derbyshire, 1789; Wright has used the newly popular sport of cricket as a means of introducing a measure of informality in this portrait of the Wood children. Although still 'composed' in a triangular grouping, the preparations for the forthcoming game allow movement and interest.

Provenance:Listed in Wright's Account Book as 'A Conversation of 3 of Mr. Woods Children, £84'; with Reverend John Wood in 1843; remained in the Wood family until offered for sale, Christie's, 1 June 1934 (lot 62), but withdrawn by the owner, R. H. Wood; sold by him to Derby Museums in 1934.
