Verso: Study of a Young Man, after Michael Dahl (?)

Date: c. 1751

Medium: black and white chalk on blue paper

Object Type:drawing
Dimensions:Support: 362 × 267 mm (14 1/4 × 10 1/2 in.)
Description:Bears striking similarity to a portrait drawing of an unidentified gentleman made by Michael Dahl, c.1725-35, ex collection Colin Hunter, and sold by Lowell Libson (now in a private collection, USA). The catalogue entry for that drawing suggests a resemblance to a portrait of James Butler, 2nd Duke of Ormonde, now in the NPG, although notes that Butler's jaw appears more prominant in the painted portrait. The Dahl drawing was previously with the Parker Gallery in London and sold via Christie's on 9 June 2005 (lot 8). [LB: 2024]
