Study of a Man

Date: c. 1751

Medium: black and white chalk on blue paper

Object Type:drawing
Dimensions:Support: 451 × 286 mm (17 3/4 × 11 1/4 in.)
Description:Original source for study unknown. Leger Galleries noted that the study might have been taken after a print by John Hayls or Greenhill (DM archives, 1996). Charles Nugent (then Curator of Drawings and Watercolours at the Whitworth Art Gallery), in correspondence with Jane Wallis from 1997-8 (DM archive) noted the similarity between this study and one in the Whitworth Art Gallery (D.1926.210), and suggested that they may both have been made by Wright. Jane Wallis and David Fraser noted the difference in handling between the two, however. Certainly, it appears the two studies are taken from the same, as yet unknown, source. a photograph of the Whitworth drawing appears in the artist boxes at the NPG archive, where it is labelled as 'School of Kneller'.
