Study of a man, head only, facing slightly to the right. His face is framed by thick curled hair (or a wig), which falls past his shoulders. He wears a simple white neckcloth or stock. Made by Joseph Wright of Derby (1734 - 1797). Black and white chalk on blue paper, in cream window mount.

Description:Leger Galleries noted the similarity of this study to Wright's study of Archbishop Hutton, after a print by John Faber Junior, after Thomas Hudson, c. 1748-50, sepia and pencil (DBYMU 1937-739/1). The sitter's face is indeed close, but in this study, he wears a simple neck stock rather than the tabbed collar worn by Hutton in the print.
