Study of a Young Man in Van Dyck Costume, after Thomas Hudson

Medium: black and white chalk on blue paper

Object Type:drawing
Dimensions:Support: 403 × 270 mm (15 7/8 × 10 5/8 in.)
Description:Leger Galleries noted the similarity of this study to a number of portraits by Thomas Hudson, including William Bouverie, 1st Earl of Radnor, 1749, and a portrait of Lord Strange, c. 1750. However, they noted that it was closest to a portriat of an unknown gentleman wearing a brown coat and ble cloak, with a mask, c. 1750, which was sold by Sotheby's on 23 March, 1977, lot 53. See DM archives, 1996. Also note similarity to Hudson's portrait of John Hynde Cotton, 4th Bt, at Madingly Hall, University of Cambridge, in which the sitter also wears a brown coat and blue cloak. The format is slightly different however, as Cotton turns to the left so his sword appears in front, rather than behind him as in the present study (LB, 2022).
