Study of a woman, called Mrs Allanson, after a portrait by Thomas Hudson; head and torso only, facing left, in a feigned oval, wearing Van Dyck dress. Her hair tied back, wearing a lace choker around her neck, her dress decorated with bows to her sleeves and bodice front, her sleeves slashed and a lace trim/collar to her bodice. A square cut out of the top left corner of the sheet. Made by Joseph Wright of Derby (1734 - 1797). Black and white chalk on blue paper, in cream window mount.

Description:In their early cataloguing notes for this study, Leger Galleries (1996) identified its source as Thomas Hudson's portrait of Mrs Allanson, c.1755 (private collection, USA), and Wright's resuse of the composition and dress for his portrait of Ann Bateman, 1755 (private collection, UK; illustrated Benedict Nicholson (1968): pl.178 and Egerton (1990), cat.2).
