Description:An inscription on the verso of the drawing records that it was made by Wright in September 1751, shortly after he began his training in the studio of Thomas Hudson. Although Hudson's painting of Philipps is untraced, the publication of a mezzotint by John Faber Junior in 1748 makes it unlikely perhaps that Wright studied the painting in the studio, but the print instead. See NPG collection (D3892) for an example. Ellen Miles notes that 'the pattern of line and shadow' suggests that it was copied from the print rather than the painting. See correspondence in catalogue file for the DBYMU 1996-1 group of drawngs. [LB: 2024]
