Study of a woman, called Jane Cust, head and torso only, her body facing forwards, her head inclined slightly to the left. Her face is lightly sketched, the majority of the focus of the drawing being on her elaborate dress. She wears a low cut bodice decorated with strings of pearls, her sleeves puffed at the shoulders and decorated with pearls. She wears a lace choker at her neck and a gauze drape about her shoulders. Her hair is dressed with strings of pearls. Brown staining to lower left. Made by Joseph Wright of Derby (1734 - 1797). Black and white chalk on blue paper, in cream window mount.

Description:Study after Thomas Hudson's portrait of Jane Evelyn, nee Cust (1725-1791) (NT, Belton House, Lincolnshire). Identified by Leger Galleries during their early cataloguing of the work (1996). The portrait of Jane Cust was paid for in 1756 according to the NPG artist box card for this work. Appears to have been used by Wright as the basis for his portrait of a woman, possibly Elizabeth Pigot, c. 1760 (private collection? sold by John Moran Auctioneers, California, 10 March 2019, lot 144 (LB, 2022).
