| Description: | Samuel Crompton, a local banker, married Elizabeth Fox of Osmaston Hall, in 1744. When Joseph Wright painted their portraits nearly forty years later, he presented them as a harmonious couple dressed in matching colours. The Cromptons were successful and well-respected locally. Samuel Crompton served twice as Mayor of Derby, was High Sherriff in 1768, and was appointed Receiver-General of Derbyshire (an officer responsible for accepting payments on behalf of the Government). Their large home on Friar Gate, The Friary, still stands today. |
