Painting of a landscape identified as Arkwright's Mills at Cromford. The mills appear nestled within a high-sided gorge. A road and brook lead towards them. Beyond, green hills and tall monument can be seen. Sunlight streams through clouds to the left of the scene. Painted by Joseph Wright of Derby (1734 - 1797). Oil on canvas in gilded frame.

Description:View shows Arkwright's first Cromford mill (established in 1771) from a position close to the junction of the present day Mill Road and A6. Scarthin Rock rises up on the left side of the painting beside Bonsall Brook (now culverted), with Mill Road and the Cromford Sough; a channel that drained water from a nearby lead mine, and over an aquaduct into the mill complex. The tower or stand established by Francis Hurt of Alderwasley Hall is visible beyond, and stands in the position of the present Crich Memorial Stand.
