Description:Needwood Forest, an ancient oak woodland once situated on the Derbyshire-Staffordshire border, was an important sanctuary for Joseph Wright during the final decade of his life. This picture was probably painted after one of his many trips to the forest to stay with his friend Thomas Gisborne and presents a peaceful vision, in which man and nature appear to live in harmony.
Provenance:Listed in Wright's Account Book as 'XXX'; offered at his posthumous sale, Christie’s 6 May 1801 (lot 52, as 'View of a Cottage in Needwood Forest', whereupon purchased by 'Tate' for £63.0.0; ...; offered for sale at Christie's, London on date 1974, whereupon purchased by Derby Museums.
