Portrait of a man, called Francis Hurt; half-length, turned slightly to the left, eyes facing forward. He is seated beside a highly polished dark wood table upon which is a document and two geological samples; one red, the other grey. To the left is a deep green silk drape. He wears a light grey wig, rolled at the temples, and a dark brown coat and matching knee-breeches. His coat is open to reveal a pale yellow waistcoat edged at the centre-front and bottom, as well as the pockets, with metallic gold 'lace'. Painted by Joseph Wright of Derby (1734 - 1797). Oil on canvas in gilded frame.
