Portrait of a woman, called Mary Hurt; half-length, turned slightly to the right, eyes facing forward. She is seated beside a highly polished dark wood table upon which is an open, upturned book. She holds a small silver and tortoiseshell box in her hand into which her fingers reach as though to remove something from it. To the right-hand corner is an ochre yellow, silk drape. She wears a satin, ochre yellow gown with a back lace-trimmed cape over her shoulders. A sheer white kerchief is secured at her breast by a bow. Her hair is light grey and partly covered by an elaborate white cap decorated with pleats and a bow. A sheer white scarf is wrapped around this cap and tied beneath her chin. Painted by Joseph Wright of Derby (1734 - 1797). Oil on canvas in gilded frame.
