Painting showing a view from within the Colosseum in Rome, by night. In the centre of the scene is the figure of a friar, kneeling before a candlelit shrine. This is occupied by a female figure wearing a crown, who sits behind an iron grill or window. Much of the painting shows evidence of past damage and restoration. Inscribed to recto, lower right, as though carved into the face of the masonry, 'I. W. P. 1789'. Painted by Joseph Wright of Derby (1734 - 1797). Oil on canvas in gilded frame.
